Triggering the Hyperlink

After moving the arrow, or "avatar", to intersect a hyperlinked object in the scene, the hyperlink is triggered by releasing the mouse button. If the avatar was moved using the keyboard arrow keys, the hyperlink is triggered by clicking on the avatar with the mouse while the URL in the message window is still visible. The target web page will then be displayed in a separate window if the target is a traditional 2D page. If the target is another CM Surveyoror compatible 3D scene, it will will replace the current 3D scene in the CM Surveyor.

In the "Freedom Ship" City At Sea example shown above, the target appears in a separate window since it is a traditional 2D page. This approach smoothly integrates traditional 2D pages with virtual reality 3D pages, and allows 3D scene models to serve as navigational "superstructure" to an existing set of traditional web pages. Web sites can thus take advantage of the best features of both 2D and 3D web technology.
